Bluebird Girls Keep the Pressure On
Goessel Girls Basketball v. Solomon Gorillas @ Goessel January 6, 2017
Potent defensive pressure provided many opportunities for Goessel’s girls as they led from start to finish against Wheat State opponent Solomon at home Friday. With runs of 13-0 in the 2nd quarter, 16-1 in the 4th quarter and allowing 1 field goal in one 13 minute stretch, the Bluebird’s wingspan and intense movement frustrated the young Gorillas. Coach Hoopes cleared the bench in the 4th quarter and in running clock, Goessel finished at 57-24 behind 21 points from Brittney Hiebert and 15 from Eden Hiebert.
Jennifer Meysing floated a nice baseline jumper to start, then Brittney hit off the glass with a pretty feed from Eden. Down the floor next, Brittney followed her own miss for two more, then caressed another fine finish off the glass completing 2 off a steal with a nifty assist again from Eden. Down 2-8, Coach Coup called time at 5:47. Eden galloped another rocket to Jenn for the layup. It was all Blue on points off turnovers at 14-5 when Solomon was again forced to call time on a trap at 3:31. Sophomore Rohleder escaped twice and put up two nice threes for the visitors to end the quarter 14-10.
Eden was credited with a sumptuous stuff to start the 2nd, then the Bluebirds rolled with two left-handed lay-ins from Brittney and Eden and the Gorillas called their 3rd timeout at 5:05. Goessel created some great stops with full court coverage. Eden launched an Aaron Rodgers arc to Brittney who caught for a picturesque ballet pirouette finish and the 24-10 lead. The Gorillas cold not convert two 1-1 opportunities and the next time down, fan Carol D. noted a pass exchange between Eden and Brittney looked so extraordinary Van Fleet and Baker couldn’t have executed better. On the pass-back underneath, Eden completed +1 for the 27-10 lead. With 55 ticks left, Eden stopped a Gorilla foray to the bucket single-handedly and the 14-2 quarter ended 28-12.
Goessel completed their sensational 21-2 run at the 2:40 mark in the 3rd, allowing only one field goal at the end of the half, keeping the Gorillas in the mist for over 13 minutes. Rohleder struck again from outside at the 2:40 mark to leave it at 35-15. Brittney notched one FG, then Leah Booton hit the front end of two FT’s, followed by Kara Burkholder with nothing but net from 12 feet out. Savanna Wuest hit pay dirt in the paint, Eden stroked two charities, then Stephany Meyer followed out of the scrum for two more to close the 11-7 3rd 39-19.
There was no slowing down in the 4th quarter. Brittney ran coast to coast, then Olivia tossed in two inside, followed by three consecutive breaks from Brittney, Jenn, and Eden. Going hard to the bucket, Brittney hit two for two from the line, then Stephany sizzle-fritzed another look and Savanna found only nylon. Madi Smith made a classy move in the closing moments for her first varsity points and Goessel finished the 18-5 quarter strong at 57-24.
Brittney Hiebert started strong in the 1st quarter with 8 and finished the night with 21, scoring in every quarter. Eden Hiebert also scored in every stanza, was perfect from the line and tallied 15 on the night. Jennifer Meysing added 6. With balanced scoring from everyone else (Savanna Wuest 4,Stephany Meyer 4, Olivia Duerksen 2, Madi Smith 2, Kara Burkholder 2 and Leah Booton 1), the Bluebirds continued their unblemished season with their 2nd win in January. Also playing tonight were Abby Hannon, Jenna Nightingale, and Emily Meier.
