Information about Title I

A Reading and Math Help Program

Title I is the nation’s largest federal assistance program for schools. The goal of Title I is to help every child get a high-quality education. Title I resources are directed toward students who need additional help in reading or math.

The program is funded through the federal government who sends the funds to the state. The state then disperses the funds to school districts based on the number of families who are below a set income level. However, a family’s income does not need to be below a set level in order for the child to receive services. The child only needs to demonstrate a need for educational help.

Chrystiana Miller, our Title I teacher, uses various methods to help students; whether assisting them in their regular classroom, through one-on-one tutoring or through small group instruction in the Title I room. Students can be referred to the program either by the classroom teacher or by the parent and can be dropped at any time when either the Title I teacher, classroom teacher or the parent wishes services to be terminated.

Under the Parents Right-To Know from KSDE No Child Left Behind, note the following information: Parents may request information regarding the professional qualifications of their children’s teacher. Professional qualifications, at a minimum include:
• Whether or not the teacher has met Kansas licensing criteria for the grade levels and subject areas being taught,
• If the teacher is teaching under an emergency or provisional waiver, and
• The baccalaureate degree and any other graduate certification or degree and the field of discipline of both, and
• If services are provided by paraprofessionals, their qualifications.

Our program promotes family involvement through an annual family reading night and a bi-monthly newsletter.

The program is kept flexible in an attempt to assist as many students as possible. Even if your child does not receive direct assistance through the Title I program, it is likely that he/she will benefit in one way or another from the program and the assistance Mrs. Miller provides. She is available to discuss concerns you may have about your child’s reading or math development.
