Title 1 Newsletter (Dec. 2023)

Merry Christmas to you and your family! 🎄

The holiday season can be a busy time! I hope your family is able to balance the hustle and bustle of out of the ordinary, special activities, mixed with quiet moments at home to read and spend time together.

Click the link to check out the Title 1 Parent Newsletter for the month! Click the link to see evidence-based articles written just for parents, covering topics like planning fun activities to keep your child learning over winter break, helping your child deal with disappointment, and tips for cultivating responsibility in your child, like creating a checklist and common pitfalls of overprotective parenting.

Here is also an Activity Calendar I hope you and your family can take advantage of- it has simple ways parents can spend meaningful time learning and growing with their child every day, in a quick, readable format.

Finally, check out a few Christmas printables, if you're interested!

  1. Winter Break Challenge. This is a no pressure challenge to keep students reading and writing in FUN ways throughout the break; students who participate and return their Challenge Sheet in January will receive a prize from me!
  2. Tricky Holiday Scenarios Social Skills Card Game. For many children, the holidays can be a roller coaster of emotions ranging from intense excitement to extreme disappointment. This social skills card game is a fun way to rehearse emotional regulation and practice tricky social scenarios before the holiday events begin (you can use the cards as discussion starters, even if you don't play the game/act them out).
  3. Is your child feeling overwhelmed? Check out this flow chart for options and a tools & activities ideas page for how to calm down and regulate again.
  4. Is your child bored? Fill in this "I'm Bored Bingo Board" from the list of suggestions (or come up with your own!) to kickstart the creativity and fun!
  5. Books make great gifts! 🎁 "Books are a great way to explore our world and create memories that extend well beyond the short days of winter." Click this link to check out recommendations of newly published books, organized by age ranges.

Active parent engagement has a profound effect on a child’s performance in school, and I hope these resources can be another tool to help!

Merry Christmas! 🎄🎅❄📚
