Senior Recognition Night

Goessel Guys Varsity Basketball v. Little River  @ Goessel     February 13, 2018

Goessel’s basketball team was recognized along with parents and each Senior was given recognition for the effort, contributions and ways they have led during their years at Goessel.  This was the last time at home for Seniors Jayce Schmidt, Nathaniel Schmucker, Jordan Griffin and Carson Sterk.  Thank you to each of these fine young men for the many ways you have shared your skills these years.

Also recognized were the cheer team of Hailey Shipp, Layci Froese, Julianna Schrag, Elyse Boden, Alex Nickel, Kirsten Horne, and MaKayla Davis.  Thanks to the cheer team for their wonderful efforts again this year!   Sponsors are:  Gretchen Schrag and Alicia Oard.

Goessel played well in defeating Peabody at home on Friday night 40-27 for their third win of the season.  Jordan Griffin put up 22 and Dylan Lindeman 13.   Goessel’s Elbiata Singers provided the national anthem and always do a fantastic and touching rendition.  Tonight v. the Little River Redskins, Freshman Jayden Garrison was too much for everyone as he scored 27 and led the visitors to a 35-68 win.  Goessel won the third quarter 13-11, but a fast start from the hot-shooting LR squad left it at 10-25 after one and the ‘Blue were out of it from there.

With 4:52 left in the 1st, Griffin pulled up from 18 feet out deep on the baseline and buried one to stay at 2-8.  Down the floor, he found nothing but net off the glass, and the Bluebirds put on a fine defensive series to pull within 7 8-15 on a zip pass from Hagewood to Jerah Schmidt, and Hagewood comforting one in with an NBA runner .  Griffin found Zogleman open in the paint with a well-crafted quick bounce.   LR hit their first 4 charities and buried three treys in the first quarter to lead 10-25 after one.

A loud voice bellowed “DEFENSE  DEFENSE” to start the 2nd, fully amplified without the amp.  The Bluebirds answered the call, holding the Redskins at bay for a full three minutes.  At the other end, Goessel penetrated three times successfully and went 2 for 6 from the stripe.  Jayce Schmidt hit some sort of triple lutz axel quadruple leap runner that immediately caused half the South Korean teenage girls in the house to scream unceasingly.  (He had to be escorted from the arena by protective security later).   Lindeman buried one from 10 feet and Carson Sterk found great rhythm inside for two more.  The 8-18 quarter ended 18-43 at the half.

At the half Rob and Sue Lehrman were announced as the Goessel “Fans of the Year.”  Congratulations Rob and Sue!    Craig Schmidt won the musical chairs event hosted by Pine Edge Golf and Myron Schmidt, winning a year’s membership to the golf course.

On this Mardi Gras evening contest, Little River’s golden freshman, Garrison, played with a magic touch and very quick hands and feet.  He single-handedly put up nearly all the 3rd quarter points for LR.    Sterk looked rock solid in the paint for a traditional three point turn and deliver.  Jordan delivered his own amazing baseline 360˚ prayer, leaving the ice dance judges with their jaws dropping and the other half of the arena audience applauding outrageously.   Sterk closed to 25-44 inside off a #5 miss/follow.  Jordan found pay-dirt and Zogleman followed again to get to 30-50.  Lindeman was credited with taking a charge and the 13-11 quarter ended at 31-54.  At 6:05 the game went into running clock at 31-62, Lindeman hit from the foul line and Jordan coasted another nice pull up in .  With all subs in at 1:19 this contest ended at 35-68.

Jorden finished with 14 and Carson Sterk 8.   Dylan Lindeman had defensive guru Swenson guarding him like a glove tonight and closed with 5.  Dylan dished out a huge 11 assists on the night.  Zach Zogleman and Jake Hagewood each scored 2 and brothers Jayce, Jerah Schmidt each also put up 2  Also in for Goessel was: Nathaniel Schmucker.  The team was a very respectable 39% from 2FG land tonight, hitting some nice efforts.   Unfortunately, the rangefinder was mis-aligned on the three pointers, going 0 for 10 and free throws hitting only 45% (5 for 11) from the line.  Griffin led Goessel’s rebounding with 7.
