C Team Tourney – Dec 15

         Goessel Guys Basketball  -   December 15, 2018

Goessel hosted a C Team tournament at home Saturday, December 15th, the Ides of December, with Canton-Galva and Central Christian.   With 30 ( +4 managers and statisticians) on this year’s guys roster, there is barely enough room to hold all the life-size team pictures newly featured on the west wall of Bluebird Coliseum.

The Bluebirds scored in each quarter in their morning matchup v. Canton-Galva.  At 2:29 Freshman Dylan Riley launched one from across the bridge spanning Roberts Creek for a huge 3 to stay at 3-9 and also notched two big blocks early on.   C team coach Jesse Brown was hard pressed to give all the team members an opportunity for playing time in this enthusiastic contest.   Goessel showed aggressive D, but the visiting Eagles used height and ball-handling to retain the upper hand.  After the first 3-13 quarter, savvy exchange student Joan Oliveras-Maqueda banked a nice 13 footer in at 6:22 and showed strong the next time down the floor going coast to coast for a 2nd attempt.  5-17.  Canton continued to score on follows and forays into the paint.   Jevin Base was credited with an excellent steal and the Eagles pulled their  press late in the half at 5-28.  With time running out, exchange student Jan Wolters turned around at 10 feet and without missing a beat went to the bank for an outstanding finish to close to 7-28.  “Der Hammer,” exchange student Daniel Uhlig, showed strong on defense and let the visiting Eagles know about his presence in the paint.  Riley showed a nice move underneath and was fouled.  Base drew a charge at mid-court.  Uhlig was credited with a nice steal and went down on the hardwood. Hard.  7-39.  At 1:02 in the 3rd quarter Oliveras-Maqueda was fouled on a drive and sank both FT’s, then threw up a long range attempt at the buzzer that sailed (un)successfully through the uprights for a football field goal but not good for the basketball tally.  9-42.  Goessel completed successful scoring in each quarter with a beautiful bounce in from Malachi Lewis to Freshman Logan Sterk, who ball-faked, head-faked and dropped a lovely 6 foot finish in to start the final quarter 11-42.  The game finished at 11-50.

Playing for C team this year:   Chicco Bertozzi, Joan Oliveras-Maqueda, Jevin Base, JJ Cashon,  Jan Wolters, Christian Moon, Dylan Riley, Malachi Lewis, Logan Sterk, Jerradon Brooks, Daniel Uhlig, and Adrian Kastner.

In the 2nd contest of the day for Goessel v. Central Christian, the Bluebirds faced off against one of the Cougars’ first ever C teams.   Two Cougar freshmen JV players, Losew and Bessmer, clearly stood head and shoulders above their teammates and provided much of the Central Christian scoring.   Goessel again put up tough D and held the Cougars to 4 early.  At 3:30, Sterk stroked in a feather soft 5 footer 2-4, and Uhlig went down hard for the first of 4 bone-jarring encounters in this one.  Joan bounced niftily to Sterk but could not finish and with the 2nd group in it went quickly to 2-14.  In a tussle underneath Riley emerged out of the scrum for two and the Bluebirds ran it to 8-17. A coast to coast run from Riley, then an Uhlig steal and snowball downhill movement down the floor with Cashon picking up the remnant and closing for two.  Jerradon Brooks followed with great savvy to stay at 10-17.  Next time down Sterk put up two more and to close the half  Chicco Bertozzi caught a Lewis miss and put it back up for an incredible follow. 14-28.  Goessel had increased its point output by 10 quarter on quarter.  Today’s officials were “letting them play” and this created some exchanges inside.  Uhlig put on his best Dwayne Johnson “eyebrow” move and the yellow flag was tossed leaving it at 14-39.   Chicco hit Riley perfectly down the floor and Riley converted 1 of 2.  Unexpected shooter Adrian Kastner matched up to the Cougars’ unexpected shooter Gill (three straight long range threes)  from three point land, hitting a personally thrilling trey to go to 18-41 and moments later, Oliveras-Maqueda went up and over the Cougar defender on a Riley miss for the spectacular Sport Center follow poke back.   In “Pickle” Cashon flicked one to Sterk for the perfect finish to close the 8-18 quarter 22-46.    Goessel again scored in every quarter, with Riley putting up two on a nice steal, Joan hitting on a follow, and Jevin Base stroking 1 FT after huge Bluebird offensive board efforts gave the home team about 6 tries on one possession.  At one moment there were three Germans, an Italian and Malachi on the floor for the Blue, a truly international menagerie.  Malachi went hard to the hoop with an excellently paced drop in off the glass and Chicco put up one from half court at the buzzer that caressed the nylon and missed the huge finish by inches.  This one closed 29-56.
