The Magician’s Elephant

Reading Level: 4th – 5th grade

While walking through the marketplace one day, Peter, a ten-year-old orphan, finds a fortuneteller. Peter enters the tent and asks her the question that is always on his mind:

“Is my sister alive, and if she is, how can I find her?”

To Peter’s surprise, the fortuneteller tells him that she is alive and that to find her, he needs to follow the elephant. Peter doesn’t know anything about an elephant, but he soon finds himself on an adventure with a large group of unusual characters.

While DiCamillo’s latest book isn’t on the same level as some of her other award-winning books, this story is a fun read that will entertain readers of all ages. Forget whether this story could really happen and enjoy!
