SO WHAT ACTUALLY GOES ON IN JUNIOR HIGH MATH?

SO WHAT ACTUALLY GOES ON IN JUNIOR HIGH MATH?

Hopefully some fun and excitement where junior high students can discover that math isn’t all that bad.  Definitely some learning!  With the change to College and Career Readiness Standards (Common Core), there will be some changes to the math curriculum, but most of what has been covered the past couple of years will still apply.

7th Grade Math

Expressions and Patterns
Operations with Integers (NEGATIVE NUMBERS!)
Rational Numbers (Operations with Fractions and Scientific Notation)
Solving Two-Step Equations and Inequalities
Proportions
Percents (Sales Tax, Discounts, Tips)
Linear Functions (Slope and Graphing)
Probability (and the Dreaded Bag of Marbles!)
Central Tendency (Box-and-Whisker Plots and Stem-and-Leaf Plots)
Area, Surface Area, Volume, Perimeter, and Circumference
Conversions (Mr. Pauls’ Favorite! )
Polygons
Transformations (Translations, Reflections, Rotations, Dilations)

8th Grade Pre-Algebra

What is the difference between pre-algebra and algebra?  In pre-algebra, the goal is to strengthen concepts from 7th grade math and to introduce students to algebraic concepts.  When it comes to state assessments, all 8th graders take the same test, whether they take pre-algebra or algebra.  In pre-algebra, we cover the same concepts that are covered in algebra – just not at the same depth or the same pace.

Rational Numbers (Operations with Integers and Fractions)
Monomials (Operations with Exponents and Scientific Notation)
Solving and Graphing Multiple-Step Equations and Inequalities
Evaluating Expressions
Linear and Nonlinear Functions (Solving and Graphing, Slope)
Two- and Three- Dimensional Geometry
Transformations (Translations, Reflections, Rotations, Dilations)
Pythagorean Theorem (Students love this one!)
Conversions
Central Tendency (and the Displaying of Information)
Probability (and just like 7th grade, the Dreaded Bag of Marbles!)
Area, Surface Area, Perimeter, Circumference, and Volume
