All Business, But Some Play

February 02, 2012

Business

Because the business world is revolutionizing at such a fast pace, it is becoming more critical than ever to take a business class while in High School.  This year, Goessel High School has a new business teacher, Mr. Schroeder.  He is helping to prepare our students for real-world experiences.  The following is a summary of what his classes are learning.

Accounting

This year they have discussed careers in accounting and how accounting is relevant in many companies. Learning debit/credit theory, preparing worksheets, and preparing financial statements for a sole proprietorship have been their biggest focus. They have recently started lessons on payroll and will finish the year learning about merchandising companies.

Accounting 2 –

This class learns very important accounting concepts such as accounting for inventories, recording depreciation on assets, and journalizing various types of investments and liabilities. Throughout the rest of the year they will spend time discussing how adjustments are recorded, how to interpret financial statements, and how to interpret/understand equity.

Accounting 3 –

This class deals with special topics and systems in accounting. A few that have been covered this year are not-for-profits, departmental business, partnerships, and branch accounting. Right now the class is learning specific methods for making informed managerial decisions.

Computer Apps –

This class has spent the most time working in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Learning various functions and how to operate the programs is their primary focus. Students also spend time developing a business plan for a company of their choosing. Designing operating documents, creating financial statements, and preparing marketing materials are only a few of the pieces of the plan.
