Elementary Art

LET'S GET POLITICAL

How do we make kids aware of current events? Get them involved. The 5th Grade Art class has taken on the challenge of making huge hallway posters, for each of the four major candidates: John McCain, Sarah Palin, Barack Obama, and Joe Biden.

Students first worked on a project to study shading and tones of lightness and darkness. Then photos from magazines such as Newsweek were chosen, as well as internet photos. They were then enlarged with the help of an opaque projector. When that is done, coloring in and shading the faces will follow. The posters will be placed in the west hallway. All students will have a chance to pass the posters and think about the historic Presidential election we are having.

STUDENTS VOTE FOR 8 WONDERS OF KANSAS ART

Goessel 4th and 5th graders got involved in voting for a state-wide choice of the best Art in Kansas. The Kansas Sampler Foundation has been polling through the last year for the "8 Wonders of Kansas" in various categories, such as Architecture, History, Cuisine, People, etc. Right now, until Oct. 15, they are voting for Art. So, Mr. Stucky took the classes to the computer lab to find the Kansas sampler website  at  www.kansassampler.org/8wonders  and found the 24 finalists. Students voted for their top 8, and the totals were added up. The Goessel choices were:

1.Keeper of the Plains statue, Wichita

2.Blue Sky Sculpture, Newton

3.Tiffany stained glass windows, First Presbyterian Church, Topeka

4.Garden of Eden, Lucas.

5.St. Mary's Catholic Church, St. Benedict.

6.Pete Felten stone sculptures, Hays. Sculptures found state-wide.

7.Buffalo Bill bronze sculpture, Oakley

8. Stan Herd earthworks, Atchison, and Lawrence.

Well, stay tuned to the Kansas Sampler website to watch when the actual results of the state-wide voting will be announced. And, hey parents, you or your family can go to the Sampler website and vote for your favorites for Kansas Art, too!
