Worrell Leads Heat Over Bluebirds

Goessel Guys Basketball     v. Rural Vista Heat      December 19, 2017             @ Hope, Kansas

Senior Dawson Worrell does it all for the Rural Vista Heat.   He handles the ball, plays at the top of the key in their “huge wingspan” zone and can fleet-foot it down the floor, finishing with ease.  Goessel could not contain him as he put up 34 tonight.  Rural Vista has a long and wide bench with players substituting who are as tall or taller than their starters.  Penetration inside against the tall cottonwoods in the paint was extremely difficult tonight.  The Bluebirds were only able to score three field goals the first half but got to the line for 30 FT attempts during the contest;  73% FT Shooting was outstanding as the Bluebirds hit 22 of the their 30 attempts.  At halftime it was 20-35 with a final of 49-66.  Goessel got scoring from 6 different players on the short court tonight.

Jordan led things off with a 2-0 lead on two charities and Dylan buried two more to go up 4-2.  With three lead changes to start, the Bluebirds looked in it, but Worrell took over and began burying shots at will from almost any chosen location.  Zogleman went to the bank early for two to lead 6-5;  fearless Jerah “the Terror” Schmidt went bravely to the hoop midst the redwoods, was fouled and hit the back end of two.  At the quarter end it was 9-16.

Jerah buried one from across Route 15 to bring the fans to a crescendo of hurrahs at 12-18.   Dylan got two more FT’s, then Jordan cruised baseline for a great finish at 18-26.   Jerah was hammered again and stroked two more, but Worrell twisted, set, penetrated, strode and otherwise put this one away at 20-35 at the half.  Goessel had notched three field goals at the break and was staying in it just by free throws, hitting an awesome 11 of 13 the first half.

In an up-tempo third stanza, each team was putting points on the board.  Dylan went end to end twice to close to 24-37, but RV went quickly on a 6-1 run.  Dylan got a stupendous baseline drive to fall +1 to go to 29-45, then Jordan hit a FT.  Jerah notched yet another big trey that looked like it was going to take the same path as 3200 Phaeton but instead went right through the hoop.  Dylan let loose a bomb from beyond the stage PA system to go to 38-53 and the quarter closed 38-55.

Between Worrell and Campuzano, this one was on ice as it went to 41-60 and finished at 49-66.  Dylan Lindeman scored 16, Sophomore Jerah Schmidt  12, Jordan Griffin 11, Zach Zogleman 4,  Jayce Schmidt 4 and Jake Hagewood 2.   Others seeing time tonight were Nathaniel Schmucker and Carson Sterk.  Griffin earned the double/double with 10 tough rebounds on the night.  Rural Vista forced 20 Goessel turnovers in the loss.
