Goessel girls varsity @ Berean  Tuesday February 21, 2012

Going up against the state ranked Warriors on Senior night in the closing game of the regular season could only be looked at as a chance to warm up for sub-state action.    However, at 4:17 in the first quarter Goessel had knotted up the score 6-6 and was playing steady defense.      After a blink of the eye and a few decibels from the Warrior band, however, it was 31-6 and the game was in the Elbing deep freeze.   In the 2nd stanza, the Warrior subs played nearly the entire 2nd half and the contest finished 58-30.

At 5:25 in the first Aimee Flaming buried one from the deep left corner to keep it at 2-4, then Johanna Hoffman rattled one in and D’Ambra Kruger fed Jessica Harvey on a gorgeous back door to tie at 6-6.  The deep Warrior bench and swarming defensive hands then got the best of the Bluebird effort and Goessel was looking at the tail lights of fast break after layup after fastbreak.  At 3:55 in the 2nd, Kruger finally was able to push a follow back into the hole to hold the onslaught to 31-8, the Bluebird offense executed well but could not find the hole.   Alex Hiebert had a pretty move underneath to take it to 39-10 and Berean closed out the tidal wave 2nd quarter at 41-10.

To start the 2nd, Kruger scored off a gorgeous assist underneath and then was fouled on another nice roll to the bucket but could not convert to score four in quick succession.   Berean put in their 2nd team midway through the third and they remained in the game for the rest of the contest.  Hiebert added two, Harvey a FT, and Hoffman two more field goals to win the third quarter 11-8.

Down 21-49,  Harvey had a nice drive to the bucket, was fouled and finished the traditional three point play.  Goessel showed nice inside passing and Hiebert added two and Harvey scored off a Kruger assist rolling to the bucket.    Goessel reached 30 off another feed from Kruger to Harvey, but Berean put 4 for 5 on the board from the charity stripe and the contest closed at 30-58.

Jessica Harvey stepped up in the 4th with 7 and finished with 10 on the night to lead the Bluebird effort.  Johanna Hoffman, Alex Hiebert and D’Ambra Kruger each scored 6.  Aimee Flaming socked in the first score of the night for the Blue and finished with 2.
