Goessel High School Wins Science Grant
National Finalist for Shell Science Lab Challenge
Goessel High School was recognized as one of 17 National Finalists in the Shell Science Lab Challenge, a grant competition administered by the National Science Teacher Association (NSTA).
Mrs. O'Neill entered the competition in October, by writing essays about the science lab conditions at Goessel High School, and the methods she uses to overcome technological shortfalls. She received notice in December that her application was selected as a Regional Finalist. For the next step in the competition, she had to tape a 5 minute video demonstrating the high school science lab facilities. Her video entry was then selected as a National Finalist.
As a National Finalist, Goessel will receive a trophy and a banner to hang at the school, a $1000 grant for purchasing lab equipment, and $1000 in donated equipment from various science supply companies. There will also be a $300 gift certificate to the NSTA bookstore, which contains many educational books about science instruction. Two GHS teachers will be given 1-year memberships in the NSTA, and have paid registrations at one of the NSTA's regional conferences in 2012.
Goessel High School is still moving forward in this competition. The top five National Finalists will receive additional awards to reach a total of $8,000,and one of those five is awarded the Grand Finalist award, totaling $20,000. The final results should be available within two weeks.
