Fraction Fondue

by Ilona Abrahams

December 04, 2011

What do a banana, an apple, a pear, a marshmallow and chocolate have to do with math?  Fifth graders found out that this is a great way to learn about FRACTIONS. Working in groups of four they were asked to estimate and weigh their fruit.  Then they were instructed to cut their fruit in to specified amounts that could be divided equally between the four of them. Some groups found out that this sounded easier than it actually was.  Finally, after an hour of hard work they were able to eat what they had prepared.  Lucky for them it included a chocolate fondue.  Check out the pictures to see how some kids really enjoyed the chocolate.
