PICK OF THE WEEK

For the week of August 30, 2010

Spoon
By Amy Krouse Rosenthal

Reading Level: 1st – 3rd grade

Spoon has been feeling sad lately.  Knife gets to cut and spread, Fork gets to go everywhere, and Chopsticks are cool and exotic.  Spoon isn’t like any of these other utensils.

However, Spoon’s friends have a different opinion of him.  Everyone is so serious with Knife, but Spoon is fun and easygoing.  Fork wishes he could measure things like Spoon does.  Chopsticks never get any time alone, and Spoon can function on his own.  It takes Spoon’s mother to finally help him realize that he is important and has some value as well.

Everybody is important and special in some way.  Sometimes it’s hard to see things in ourselves that others see.  This book is a good reminder that all of us are valuable!
