Junior High Gym Project Continues
A Forgotten Bluebird Appears
by Marc Grout
April 18, 2008
Work continues on the junior high gym project. During the first week of April, the old Pepsi scoreboards came down, and new ones went up. The new scoreboards use LED lighting, so there will be no more need to climb the ladder and change the little light bulbs that frequently burn out.
The new scoreboards are blue, one of them printed with GOESSEL, and the other with BLUEBIRDS.Sanding of the floor began on April 15. The floor will be deep-sanded, the lines repainted, and the floor refinished. This process should take about 2 weeks.
While sanding the white circle in the middle of the court, an image of an 'extinct' Bluebird appeared. This mascot was painted over in the summer of 1995 when the circle was filled in with white, because of a rule change in volleyball that required a solid line to be painted all the way across mid-court.
Rather than have a Bluebird with a line painted across the middle, the image was simply covered up. But for a very brief time, the Bluebird could be seen once again after almost 13 years. The final part of the project, new bleachers, will be installed during the summer months. Please feel free to stop by and take a look at the progress!
